What To Do When You Have a Plumbing Emergency at Home

A burst pipe, severe leak or blocked drain can happen at any time — and when it does, most homeowners aren’t sure what to do first. Acting quickly and correctly in the first few minutes can make the difference between minor inconvenience and thousands of pounds of water damage to your property.

Here is exactly what to do if you face a plumbing emergency at home.

Step 1: Turn Off the Water Supply Immediately

Your first action should always be to stop the flow of water. Locate your main stop tap — usually found under the kitchen sink, in the cupboard under the stairs or near the water meter. Turn it clockwise to shut off the water supply to the entire property. If you can’t find the main stop tap, individual isolation valves are often located near toilets, washing machines and sinks.

Step 2: Turn Off the Boiler and Hot Water

If the leak is near your boiler, radiators or hot water cylinder, switch off your boiler and the central heating system immediately. This prevents hot water from continuing to circulate and causing further damage.

Step 3: Turn Off the Electrics If Water Is Near Wiring

If water is leaking near any electrical sockets, switches or your consumer unit (fuse box), do not touch them. Turn off the electricity at the main fuse box if it is safe to do so, and do not re-enter the affected area until a qualified engineer confirms it is safe.

Step 4: Contain the Leak

Use towels, buckets and bowls to catch dripping water and minimise damage to floors and ceilings. If water is coming through the ceiling, carefully pierce the ceiling at the lowest point with a screwdriver to allow water to drain in a controlled way — this prevents a larger ceiling collapse.

Step 5: Call an Emergency Plumber

Once the immediate situation is under control, call a qualified emergency plumber immediately. Do not attempt to repair burst pipes, leaking joints or blocked drains yourself unless you have the proper knowledge and tools — incorrect repairs can make the situation significantly worse.

At WLBC Services, our emergency plumbing team is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, across North West London and surrounding areas. We aim to arrive within 30–60 minutes of your call.

Step 6: Document the Damage for Insurance

Take photographs and videos of all water damage before any cleaning or repairs begin. This documentation will be essential if you need to make a home insurance claim.
